Crown of Thorns - Breakthrough
Now & Then NTHEN26, 1996
This is the first album I heard by this band, although their web site suggests there was earlier material. It certainly impressed me at first hearing - a good strong rock sound without going over the top on noise at any time. The harmonised lyrics are supported by powerful guitar to produce a sound that doesn't easily compare with other artists. The music is varied and I must admit the second track Don't let me down had me puzzled for weeks for it sounded familiar. I finally took the plunge and looked it up to discover it was a Beatles track although Crown of Thorns have transformed it in excellent fashion. There is a lot of radio-friendly music here and it is a shame this band hasn't had better exposure. All in all this is an excellent album that I would definitely recommend it to lovers of the heavier but melodic end of rock. (PS - before you jump in and go buying anything you can find by Crown of Thorns, make sure you pick the right band - there is a European band by the same name that produce some very odd music indeed.)
