Mecca - Mecca
Frontiers FRCD110, 2002
Mecca's sound harks back the the 1980's, when rock steadied off into comfortable listening with mega-bands like Asia and Boston producing a sound which was acceptable to pop listeners too. Tones of Foreigner and The Police can be heard here, but it is unfair to label their sound as it is very individual and spreads across several styles as you make your way through the album. So who are Mecca? Nobody we have heard of before, it would seem, although if you delve a bit deeper there are connections with Survivor and Toto. But basically this is a whole new band and a whole new sound, but something I was instantly comfortable with. If this album had been released in the eighties, it would have been a sure-fire hit. Without any previous success, and with the present blinkered attitude of British radio, I don't think Mecca stand much of a chance, which is a great shame. I would really like to be proved wrong, for Mecca really deserve better.
