Lana Lane - Project Shangri-La
Limb LMP65002, 2002
Lana Lane seems to have shaken off the Rocket Scientists sound with this
album and forged off in her own direction, which of course she should rightly
do although it must be difficult when married to the leading light of that
band. Instead of the clanging guitar and blasting keyboard chords one has come
to expect, this album starts gently but soon bursts into a steady rock number
that is also the title track.
But there is better to come - Encore follows in a style
reminiscent of Heart at their best - if this were the 1980s this would make a
smash hit No1 single. The Nightingale is in the same vein but if you
yearn for the pounding bass accompaniment that seemed everywhere in Secrets
of Astrology, The Best Within You and I Believe won't fail
you. And there are ballads, too, including the most beautiful Ebbtide -
my personal favourite.
All in all, Lana Lane has created a varied album that leaves past work
far behind. Alas, her material is currently only available on import, although
with the British radio obsession with dance, rap or golden oldies the decision
to not market Lana Lane in the UK is probably sheer common sense. Such a shame,
for talent of this type deserves worldwide coverage. Make the effort to get it,
you'll be glad you did!
