Star One - Space Metal
Inside Out SPV08565042, 2002
Star One is the name of Arjen Anthony Lucasson's latest project. At least, it was the latest
when I wrote this. This multi-talented musician may already be known to you for his work as Ayreon. The recent Ayreon album Universal Migrator was divided over two CDs - one of more melodic rock, and the other a tad harder. I see Star One as a logical development of the latter, and considering the list of backup artists looks somewhat familiar I don't really see why this music isn't marketed as Ayreon. Yes, the sound is harder, powerful and heavy - a fusion of Ayreon, Rocket Scientists and Threshold, with the bass throb of the latter very prominent in tracks like High Moon. Given the presence of prominent members of the three aforementioned bands, it can't be said that this new album really breaks any fresh ground but there's no denying it's good stuff. There is much here with sing-in-the-bath choruses, so there's no reason why this kind of material shouldn't make radio, but we all know it won't. There are also some spectacular progressive tracks, with powerful orchestration from the keyboards, like The Eye of Ra and the closing Starchild. Creating music of the heavy metal genre is easy, but creating good heavy metal is a real skill. Star One has achieved it.
