Flamborough Head - One for the Crow
Cyclops CYCL108, 2002
Just a year separates this album from Flamborough Head's last, but a lot has changed. There has been a dramatic change in the line-up of this five-piece Dutch Band, the change of lead guitarist might go unnoticed, but the change of lead singer certainly cannot. The scratchy, breathless voice of Siebe-Rein Schaaf (which were somehow never quite comfortable but intriguing nevertheless) has been replaced by those of a lady - Margriet Boomsma. The resultant change of vocalist has turned the Flamborough Head sound right round, and to me the result is very reminiscent of Renaissance from the Song for all seasons and Azure D'Or era. The band has also built on the wonderfully orchestrated final track from the last album by adding sumtuous keyboards to the tinkling guitar, resulting in a wonderfully pleasant musical excursion all the way through. Once again, the album finishes on a high note, with a two part progressive meander of ten minutes in the two-part New Shoes. I don't know about it being One for the Crow but this is definitely one for the CD player!
