Sonata Artica - Silence
Century Media 8063-2, 2001
This one can come as a bit of a shock to the system, if you don't know what you are about to get. Sonata Artica are a five-piece band from Finland - playing fast and furious and singing (before you ask) in English. So fast and furious that it leaves you wondering how they hit the right notes at the right time, but this is high-speed metal done with astonishing precision. Could it be Iron Maiden at 78 rpm? No way, this is a style all in itself. By the time you've pounded through three breathlessly fast tracks, you might be wondering if you can stick it for the remaining ten. Don't distress, the music does slow down at times, although to keep up the fascination the beautiful The End of This Chapter starts with a rather creepy telephone call. It has to be said that these slower tracks are the ones most suitable for aiplay, but they don't give a true picture of the band's talent. The real value is in the fast tracks like San Sebastion and False News Travel Fast. I remain fascinated by this intriguing music, it's impossible to categorise as I've heard nothing like it before. If you like to experiment with different musical genres, you really should try it, but if you are a little conservative, steer clear.
