Spock's Beard - Snow
Inside Out 65152, 2002
I have to admit with lead singer Neal Morse exploring other avenues, both solo and with Transatlantic, I feared that the Beard's 2000 release V might be their last. A bombardment of albums of live and miscellaneous twaddle reinforced this view. But Spock's Beard have come bouncing back, not with just another album, but with a massive double-CD concept album. The them of this piece isn't wintery weather, but the tale of a man who came to pick up the nickname Snow for reasons you will have to find out for yourself. If you are fortunate (?) enough to buy the limited edition box set, you get one of those "it doesn't fit my filing system" picture book CD holders, a bonus CD full off stuff not good enough for anything else and all sorts of other goodies like sticky labels. Spock's Beard never cease to amaze me, both for their vibrant and fresh heavy sound, and for the fact that you never have time to get bored, such is their variety. Every album is different, and every track has its own virtues. Tracks like I'm the guy and I'm dying stand out as particularly powerful, but finding a track to recommend for radio playing is always going to be difficult. Still, there are 26 to choose from!
