Journey - Arrival
Columbia 4984792, 2001
It has been five years since Journey released their spectacular Trail by
Fire album and I (amongst many) was waiting patiently for a follow-up.
Would there be one?
Suddenly along comes Arrival and we are not to be disappointed. However,
there is a drastic change - lead singer Steve Perry has gone and is replaced
by Steve Augen. The band has made a tremendous gamble, they clearly auditioned
for a matching voice for it is hard to tell that it isn't Steve Perry's husky
voice belting out the lyrics. The gamble is, of course, the risk that the replacement
has the right voice but not the power, but Steve Augen seems to have it all.
Certainly the band we be able to perform old material seamlessly.
The album material is not quite as rocky as Trial by Fire which to
me is a slight disappointment, but there is a lot of summery middle line material
here which will undoubtedly warrant airplay in the US although it is doubtful
if any UK station will bother making the space.
Somehow, Journey have the ability of creating quality music which neither sounds
modern or outdated. It is a timeless sound that I don't think will ever age.
