Magnum - Breath of Life
SPV SPV085-72902CD, 2002
Hard Rain came and went, and now Magnum have reformed. Whilst perhaps not quite as innovative as the Hard Rain interlude, the reformed Magnum have retained some of the flavour whilst also re-inventing the established Magnum style. The result is a very listenable and radio-friendly, cheerful but rocky album. Never over-the-top or over-heavy - possibly a sensible step to get re-established.
It is hard to find fault with this album - excellent both form a technical and audible point of view. The title track Breath of Life is a fine example of their easy-going rocky sound, as is After The Rain, but that's just one of many. However, the tightness of the album is blemished by three "bonus" tracks of live padding at the end.
Breath of Life is a timeless piece that deserves to become a rock classic of the future.
