Electric Light Orchestra - Electric Light Orchestra Part II
Telstar 39810122, 1991
The Electic Light Orchestra was chugging along nicely until 1983, with
every album getting more powerful than the last. Then all went silent
Since then, there have been a number of "comebacks" but as often happens
the media failed to notice them. Electric Light Orchestra Part II was a
reformation without Jeff Lynne. This album, their only release, flopped UK
charts, reaching only No 32.
What was this? Well, with the wind blown out of any band's sails, its
jolly difficult to just walk back in again, but it was a creditable effort. In
all respects this is traditional ELO, just as they used to be in the good 'ol
days. Its problem is that it doesn't break any new ground, and doesn't even
come near their later material at the climax of the band's career on albums
like Time and Secret Messages. And I believe that was the reason
for the failure - it was the right music at the wrong time.
There is lots of radio-friendly music here, though, and for comfortable
listening you can't go far wrong with this.
