Galahad - Following Ghosts

Avalon GHCD6, 1998

Following Ghosts, by Galahad

"Thank you for choosing Galahad's new long-playing record. The Avalon Recording Corporation hope it will provide you with many hours of listening pleasure and entertainment." says a nice young lady when you start playing the CD. "For maximum effect, please . . .". No, I shall not spoil the fun, but stand by for a Spinal Tap-like wind-up.

In no time the album bursts into the first proper track Myopia which is a fine demonstration of what is to come - melodic progressive rock delivered with power and emotion. Next, Imago drops into a soft and haunting ballad with lead singer Stuart Nicholson's vocals echoed by Sarah Quilter's pure and perfect voice. And so it goes on.

I find Galahad's sound on this album difficult to compare with other bands for to me it is unique. There are some excellent epics to be heard - Bug Eye is just a tad under 14 minutes although it is such a beautiful song you don't notice the time fly. That's a song about babies in the womb, which may come as a bit of a stunner as you read this, but it really doesn't matter because it all works. The subject matter of the whole album varies widely - touching on war and dolphins too - so it is certainly not a concept album.

Oh, and that intro. Corny though it seems, I haven't grown tired of it yet.

I haven't heard any other material from this band, but am proceeding cautiously on that front as I hear their other work is quite different. I just want more of this, and more, and more.
